After spending my college years in Washington, DC and having been back several times for visits there is so much I could write about this place. I’ll start with my top 5 things to do and potentially turn this into a series of posts about our nation’s capitol. Oh and did I mention FREE?!
#5 Smithsonian’s National Zoo
Nestled in hilly terrain in Rock Creek Park, this zoo is a nice escape from a busy, political climate of the city. Wheelchairs and electric vehicles are available on a first come first serve basis. Wheelchairs are free while the electric vehicles are about $30 per day. Take note of the fact that this is on hilly terrain. When I went I used one of their free wheelchairs…. which is fine going in when it’s all down hill. Alas, the way out is all uphill. Bonus-You get a good workout too!
#4 Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
You don’t have to be Catholic to appreciate the art and architecture of this basilica. Take a tour of the beautiful church and don’t forget the crypt church on the first floor. It’s also located adjacent to the Catholic University of America (my Alma Mater) so maybe I’m biased. I love stopping by to light a candle or say a quick prayer. It’s located in the Brookland neighborhood in NE DC, accessible by metro. Howard University is also nearby.
#3 Smithsonian American History Museum
Of all the Smithsonian museums this is my favorite. It has it all from Julia Child’s kitchen to the original Star Spangled banner. It’s located right on the national mall so when you’re done pop outside for a picture of the Washington monument or the US Capitol.
#2 Arlington National Cemetery
OK so this one is technically in Virginia but it’s just a metro stop away. It is so beautiful and a reverend reminder of those who served this country. Go see the tomb of the unknown soldier and watch the ceremonial changing of the guard. Here, you can also see the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame Memorial which is a memorial at the gravesite of assassinated President John F. Kennedy. This is another hilly spot so if you have mobility issues keep this in mind.
#1 Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial has always been my favorite spot in DC. Besides being one of the most historical places where many notable speeches were given, it also boasts some of the best views. Looking out across the reflecting pool where Jenny from Forest Gump ran across you see the WWII memorial, then the Washington Monument and finally the Capitol.
Don’t let the steps stop you from seeing Honest Abe himself. There is an elevator inside that can take you up to the statue and let you see those famous views. Once, I was there visiting with friends and my scooter battery died. Good times. The cab driver was the hero that day. I have since learned to always fully charge your batteries before sight seeing and maybe even pack the charger!
There you have it my top 5. This is by no means everything, but it’s a good taste for what DC has to offer. This list also covers different geographic parts of the city. What did I miss? If you’ve been to DC where are your favorite spots? I’m always up for new adventures…
Honorable Mentions: touring the Capitol and White House, shopping in Georgetown, and seeing the Cherry Blossoms in spring by the Tidal Basin
